The grow model is almost certainly the best known coaching model in the world today. And there are good reasons for that. It is effective, easy to learn, can be applied to virtually any situation and yet can be applied …
We use the GROW model because it is easy for most people to understand. To deal with a problem, issue, goal or challenge you have to know:
Where you want to get to
Where you are currently
What are the internal or external obstacles stopping you moving from one place to the other
How you can get around the obstacles
What are you going to commit to in terms of actions
What do you think about other coaching models?
We believe there are many good coaching models out there. We use GROW because it is easy to train people to use it but we want coaches to use any model that they find effective. We built CoachMaster, our online coaching software around GROW but are quite open to reprogramming it with other models if people want to try them virtually.
When should you not use GROW?
In the same circumstances when you should not use any coaching model:
When the person is very emotionally distressed
When there is a lack of trust between the coach and client
If what the client needs is factual information rather than a process to help them find their own answers to a problem
If the client has a strong dislike of linear processes
